Monkey Sanctuary Trust is a unique environmental charity dedicated to:
Woolly Monkey - what is it?
The woolly monkey (lagothrix lagothricha) is one of the largest and most beautiful of the South American primates. They live in the middle and upper Amazon basin to the west of the rivers Negro and Tapajos. There are four recognised sub-species of woolly monkey. These are mountain or long-haired woolly monkey (lagothrix lagothricha lugens), the brown woolly monkey (lagothrix lagothricha poepiggii), the grey woolly monkey (lagothrix lagothricha cana) and the brown-headed woolly monkey (lagothrix lagothricha lagothricha).
Woolly monkeys are arboreal (meaning tree-dwelling), spending most of their time high in the canopy of the trees and rarely venturing to the forest floor.
Woolly monkeys have evolved in a way which enables them to exploit this tree-top niche, to travel easily along narrow limbs, to reach nuts, seedpods and fruits at the end of branches, to leap between gaps safely and even to sleep securely 150 feet above the ground.
Capuchin Monkey - what is it?
Capuchins were named after capuchin monks because the dark fur that forms a cap on their heads and extends down in 'side-burns' resembles the cowl or headdress of the capuchin priests.
Capuchin monkeys are one of the most intelligent and adaptable of all South American primates. The first capuchins (Cebus species) appeared 16.3 million years ago in South America and, like all monkeys capuchin monkeys share about 97% of their DNA with humans. All capuchin species are neotropical, in other words capuchin monkeys are mainly found in northern and central South America. Within this range only the howler monkey is as widespread, and the black-capped capuchin or tufted capuchin has the widest distribution of any new world monkey, as capuchin monkeys are found in every South American country except Uruguay and Chile.
Monkey Sanctuary Trust is based at The Monkey Sanctuary in Looe, Cornwall, UK. The Monkey Sanctuary is home to a social colony of Woolly monkeys and a group of rescued ex-pet Capuchin monkeys. The Trust provides advice and support for primate, woolly and capuchin monkey rescue centres and sanctuaries around the world.
Each year the Monkey Sanctuary Trust educates thousands of visitors on monkey life in the wild and in captivity, on the ethics and problems of captivity for woolly monkeys, about ideas for rehabilitation as well as other animal welfare and conservation issues for woolly and capuchin monkeys.

The Monkey Sanctuary Trust is a registered charity and receives no government funding. We rely totally on voluntary donations and the generosity of people like you, so we can continue to carry out our vital welfare work.
There are lots of ways you can help – by giving your time, signing up for Give As You Earn, by leaving us a legacy or even just signing our petition to end the primate pet trade in the UK.
Whatever your age, if you have an idea which will help to raise funds and/or awareness for The Monkey Sanctuary Trust, why not give it a go? We would be more than happy to provide assistance if needed. We can send you promotional leaflets and posters and on some occasions a keeper may be able to visit your school, work place or community group to assist with talks.
Some fundraising ideas:
We’re sure you will come up with your own exciting and imaginative fundraising ideas.

Writing the sanctuary into your will is a particularly important way of supporting our work. Legacies provide a reliable and consistent income for us, meaning we can continue to care for monkeys and promote welfare and conservation worldwide. The more stabilised our income becomes the easier it is to commit to valuable long-term projects. Legacy gifts to charity are tax free and can be managed to reduce the total inheritance tax payable on an estate.

If you are interested in the work that we do here at The Monkey Sanctuary Trust, why not try to get an article about The Trust into your local paper? We are trying to raise the profil
e of The Trust all over the UK and this is great way to help us do just that. You could write about a visit to The Sanctuary, or perhaps about the primate pet-trade in the UK – you could even try to spark a debate in your local area through the paper. Whatever topic you choose, you are always welcome to get in touch with staff at The Sanctuary for any help or information you might need.
Email us at info@monkeysanctuary.org. If you do manage to get an article printed, don’t forget to send us a copy for our archives.
We are ALWAYS in need of various items, large and small for use around the territory, house and grounds. It could be anything from a sanctuary vehicle (pictured; generously donated by Bristol Wheels Project) to ropes for enclosures to kitchen equipment and bedding for the house. Keep an eye on our website for current appeals.
Items we are always in need of:
If you think you might be able to donate any of the above items, or if you have something which you think we might need (however obscure!), give us a call on 01503 262532 or email us at info@monkeysanctuary.org.
Recycling really does make a difference! Here at The Monkey Sanctuary Trust we recycle as much of our household and café waste as possible; paper, aluminium, glass, plastic and card. (Lots of things can be made into safe interesting toys for monkeys!) We also compost unwanted raw and cooked food as well as the dirty shavings and leftover food from the monkey enclosures.
A disturbing amount of mobile phones and printer cartridges are thrown away adding to land-fill every year. In most cases these items can be recycled and used again. It is because these items can be recycled that they have a value and by collecting these products you can generate significant amounts of money for The Monkey Sanctuary Trust.
If you would like to help the environment and raise some money for the monkeys at the same time, you can set up a collection box at your school, office or other public place. You can also bring your unwanted printer cartridges and mobile phones when you visit The Sanctuary and drop them into one of our collection points around the site. Alternatively, we can send you reply-paid envelopes so you can send individual items to Reclaim-it from your home. If you would like to set up a collection point or would like envelopes sent to you please email us at info@monkeysanctuary.org
